When Court Watch first monitored protective order cases in 2011, judges told only 30% of abusers who received final protective orders that they must turn in any guns in their possession.  Following several reports in which we highlighted the rates at which individual judges notified abusers and underscored the importance of this notification, judges in 2016 told abusers 70% of the time that they must turn in their guns to law enforcement.
