Survivors of domestic violence need safe places they can go to transfer their children for visits with the other parent without experiencing fear or injury. Court Watch leaders had a good meeting today with County Councilmember George Leventhal, Sheriff Popkin, Uma Ahluwalia (Director of DHSS) and their staffs. We discussed the urgent need for safe exchange centers in convenient locations throughout Montgomery County. Court Watch stressed the need for services in East and Down County as well as the Rockville area.
Councilmember Leventhal has asked County staff to assess what existing County buildings might be appropriate to use to provide such services. We’ll be monitoring progress and working to educate other County Council members about this important issue.
