Community tour for new judges?
Wouldn’t it be great if every new District and Circuit Court judge in Montgomery County took a tour of our county to better understand the scope of local social problems that will spill into their courtrooms and the services available that judges can use to forge lasting solutions?
Judges could hear from domestic services providers and see the Family Justice Center, the Safe Passage Center, the abuser’s intervention program, “New Beginnings,” SAFE START, the County’s probation department and the Montgomery County Detention Center.
This is an inspiring story about a judge in California who went out in the community to meet the people who would be affected by a case he was to decide on related to an area frequented by the homeless. The judge wanted to meet some of the people who would be affected by his decision and make sure he understood the true situation on the ground. He wanted to understand what the community would need in the way of services as part of any decision.
Judge Carter didn’t narrowly read law; he made sure his decision was just. A lot to wish for maybe, but a goal worth working toward.
